My first ever game to be published (though, as a prototype. Progress...), Space Exterminator (SpEx) is my learning experience with the Gdevelop 5 engine. I built the controls in about a week and then took a break to work on a mobile game.
That game was Warzle. Warzle is a niche, strategy game I envisioned over a decade ago, but didn't get to work on until back in 2015. I rebuilt it four times since then on Clickteam Fusion., but was never able to complete it. The Gdevelop version is playable on Android, but the memory and gameflow need work. I had some people test it and decided, based on their feedback, that SpEx had the most potential for success.
So I started back on SpEx in March of this year (2020) and I learned a lot of techniques trying to make this game fun; I hope people enjoy it. The fate of this project is undecided because it started out as part of a much bigger idea.
The problem was my many limitations (my computer, lack of experience in digital art, understanding of the engine, etc.). I had to scale it way down from what I set out for and even then I found myself constantly jumping through hoops and implementing various workarounds and doing rollbacks. It got tedious, and it was fun tedium, but I eventually realized that I was catching bullets in the future that I shot from the past.
So I gave a last push to at least get it to a playable (and finish-able) state and that's where you all come in. How is it? Is it fun? Boring? Hard? Easy? All feedback helps. I'm currently working on an action adventure game with all the techniques I learned over the past eight months plus my years of experience in coding and sound design. I'll keep you all posted. Cheers!
